Critically acclaimed, with a voice described by Opera Today as an "impressive, substantial tenor, rock solid in its delivery," Richard Cox will join SFCM's lauded Voice department in 2025. Cox will be a Professor of Voice and Executive Chair of the Voice program.

"I am looking forward to joining the distinguished faculty of the ���߲ݴ�ý Francisco Conservatory of Music,” Cox said. “Through the recently expanded multi-genre voice curriculum, SFCM has solidified its investment in cross-training the emerging 21st-century vocal artist.” Cox is also managed by Opus 3 Artists, an alliance partner of SFCM.

Cox’s legacy is far-reaching across the opera world. “Richard Cox possesses a profound knowledge of not only the complex mechanics of voice technique, but perhaps more importantly, a deep understanding of precisely the level of work and dedication it takes to master the art of singing,” said Grammy award-winning mezzo-soprano , represented by Askonas Holt, part of SFCM’s growing alliance since 2022. “He comprehends thoroughly the psychological and physical challenges of performing on the operatic stage, and has an uncanny ability to navigate those waters with incredible clarity and, thankfully, a beautiful humility with his students. Simply put, he is a true treasure.”

Cox will also join the roster of voice teachers for the . He has already been a part of the  since 2022. Both organizations have deep and long-standing relationships with the Conservatory. 

“Richard is a teacher of extraordinary capability with the prodigious professional experience that is required for real mentorship,” said SFCM President David H. Stull. “His passion for great singing and compelling repertoire is boundless. We are deeply honored to welcome him to the SFCM faculty."

The addition of Cox to the faculty comes as SFCM expands its Voice curriculum to multiply opportunities for young singers. All undergraduate voice students will continue to focus on the highest standards of professional training, while repertoire and technique will openly embrace opera, musical theater, and contemporary music. 

"Richard Cox is a consummate artist and pedagogue," said Voice Department Chair Catherine Cook. "He brings with him many successful years in the opera business and on the world’s most important stages, as well as many years of teaching experience. His energy and passion is inspiring and I look forward to him being part of our SFCM community."

New classes include modules that will focus on a specific style of vocal arts: Musical Theatre, Acting and Art Song, Opera, and Contemporary Voice. “SFCM vocal artists will explore works from the traditional classical music canon alongside repertoire in musical theater, cabaret, and contemporary commercial music genres,” Cox said.

The noted tenor is equally excited about what SFCM's cutting-edge studio and performance technology will bring to the student experience. “As an educator, I look forward to championing this innovative curriculum that will be enhanced by SFCM's industry leading advanced technology resources,” he added.

Cox has appeared in many prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Los Angeles Opera, and Washington National Opera. He also serves on the voice faculty of the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and the ���߲ݴ�ý Francisco Opera Center Adler Fellowship Program. Before coming to SFCM Cox served on the faculty of the Bard College Conservatory of Music Graduate Vocal Arts Program. He holds degrees from Tennessee Technological University, Florida State University, and The Juilliard School.
