SFCM PRE-COLLEGE ACADEMY NOW TAKING APPLICATIONS
The Pre-College Academy is designed to advance the youngest musicians to become masters of their craft and leave them with capabilities to succeed in an evolving world.
߲ݴý Francisco, CA— The ߲ݴý Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) is pleased to announce the opening of applications for the 2022-23 school year for its Pre-College Academy on February 1st, 2022.
This dynamic program is an immersive experience that instills the value of music in children 18 and under, providing tailored instruction for the next generation of musicians. This year brings the return of the popular Telegraph Quartet Chamber Music Immersive as well as our new Roots, Jazz, and American Music program that specializes in jazz ensemble and musicianship classes. "Through the Academy, students have the unique opportunity to train with world class artists, including members of the ߲ݴý Francisco Symphony, Opera, Jazz, and Ballet. Its comprehensive curriculum fosters artistic excellence in performance and creates a space for students to explore all facets of music alongside other gifted young musicians,” said Michael Roest, the director of the Pre-College Academy.
Under its new name of the Pre-College Academy, the curriculum integrates private lessons with music theory and ear training courses, small and large ensemble experiences, and side-by-side performance opportunities that make music a core part of their lives. Additionally, students participate in special chamber music seminars and master classes with renowned performers and educators.
This year will also include our Technology and Applied Composition (TAC) program that includes Ableton Live, musician mixing and mastering, sound decision, and film scoring. This exciting new program allows students to work inside state-of-the-art facilities so impressive they recently hosted the Recording Academy for a Grammy listening event. The TAC program prepares young composers for a cutting edge career that bridges art and technology.
Our Pre-College alumni go on to excel in all areas. From entering top-level collegiate music schools and conservatories, to distinguishing themselves professionally as performers, composers, teachers, and scholars.
The Pre-College Academy is tailored to stimulate, develop, and expand a child's brain development through music education. In 2021 SFCM announced the publication of a white paper demonstrating the measurable benefit that music has on child development. It was written by Dr. Indre Viskontas—an opera singer, neuroscientist, and SFCM professor.
The report, "Music for Every Child" aggregates existing research to codify and clarify the precise impacts music education has on developing minds. Dr. Viskontas makes the case for music education in multiple ways, from scientific to academic and practical to financial, pointing out that the benefits of being involved in music making are cumulative, and extend far beyond childhood and into young adulthood.
