SFCM President David Stull addresses the class of 2023.

The 含羞草传媒 Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) played host to commencement for the Class of 2023 at the Herbst Theatre in 含羞草传媒 Francisco on May 19, conferring degrees to 184 undergraduate, postgraduate, and graduate students.

鈥淭he number one most important word for you leaving today is 鈥榦ptimism鈥,鈥 said President David Stull. 鈥淚t allows you to see the world as endless possibilities.鈥 Optimism, the ability to work on a team or by one鈥檚 self, the discipline to achieve, and the originality to create the unexpected are among the skills of those who study music, Stull detailed.

Double bassist Alexandria Kelley BM 鈥23 addressed her classmates and guests by saying, 鈥淏eing an artist means being an ambassador of the values we want to see around us.鈥 Kelley and Jasmine Sahd PSC 鈥23, who studied vocal performance, were nominated and elected by their peers as student speakers.

"We need passionate young people to get us reconnected through music to what matters most about being human 鈥 and I choose you," Composer Jake Heggie said. "I choose you to ignite and share the flame of possibility and the fire of inspiration. I choose you to wake up the world and blaze new pathways. I choose you, Class of 2023. You鈥檝e done good work 鈥 now get out there and do great work."

Two students were honored for their academic achievement: Allegra Kelly BM 鈥23 received the Dean鈥檚 Award and Laura Elena Fernandez MM 鈥23 was presented with the President鈥檚 Award. Both earned degrees in vocal performance.

"Congratulations class of 2023, this is not an ending, it's an overture, let's go out there and put on a show!" Student speaker Jasmine Sahd PSC 鈥23, who studied vocal performance, said to her classmates.
