SFCM Faculty, Alliance Partners Celebrate GRAMMY Nominations
SFCM faculty and its Alliance partners Opus 3 Artists, Askonas Holt, and PENTATONE Records are up for numerous awards.
Those tuning into the 2025 GRAMMYs will see SFCM and its alliance partners up for some exciting awards!
SFCM professor and Director of Recording Services Jason O’Connell is up for a nomination for his producing work on Saariaho: Adriana Mater in the Best Opera Recording category. This is the second time he’s been nominated at the GRAMMYs: O’Connell previously won in 2021 in the Best Classical Compendium category for his work on From The Diary Of Anne Frank & Meditations On Rilke by Michael Tilson Thomas.
“It's an incredible honor to be recognized by the Recording Academy this year,” O’Connell said. “I feel truly fortunate to work alongside the remarkable musicians of the ߲ݴý Francisco Symphony and outstanding music director, Esa-Pekka Salonen. My role at the ߲ݴý Francisco Conservatory of Music has provided invaluable opportunities to explore and refine my skills in audio production, enhancing my work on these symphony projects. I’m deeply grateful for the support and collaboration of my colleagues at both institutions—working together on these projects has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.”
The ߲ݴý Francisco Symphony, where nearly two dozen of SFCM’s faculty are members (many of them principals), was also nominated for three GRAMMY awards in the categories of Best Orchestral Performance, Best Opera Recording and Best Contemporary Classical Composition.
SFCM’s Alliance partners are also celebrating several exciting nominations. Askonas Holt, which SFCM acquired in 2022, received nods for artists Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Marin Alsop, Julia Bullock, Joyce DiDonato, Ailyn Pérez, Emanuel Ax and Yo-Yo Ma.
Opus 3 Artists, which SFCM acquired in 2020, was nominated across numerous categories, involving more than dozen artists. Congratulations to Béla Fleck, Marin Alsop, JoAnn Falletta, Daniela Mack, Ryan McKinny, Michael Chioldi, Nicholas Phan, Leonidas Kavakos, Mason Bates, and Christopher Rountree. A special shout out also goes to John Holiday and William Burden, who appear on Best Opera Recording nominee Puts: The Hours.
SFCM’s lauded partner PENTATONE Records earned two nominations. Home by Miró Quartet was nominated in Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance category. In the Best Opera Recording category, PENTATONE was nominated for their recording of The Shining, an opera by Paul Moravec and Mark Campbell based on the novel by Stephen King.
In the Best Engineered Album, Classical category SFCM’s Mason Bates also received some accolades from the GRAMMYs with his music appearing on the nominated album Bruckner: Symphony No. 7; Bates: Resurrexit by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
SFCM has a long relationship with the Recording Academy. Recent winners include faculty Awadagin Pratt and Mason Bates. In 2021 members of the Recording Academy visited SFCM to utilize its state-of-the-art sound and studio equipment to help judge the awards.
Congratulations to all! The awards ceremony for this year's GRAMMYs will be February 2nd, 2025.
